Social Media Security Tips

Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat and Twitter are a great way to keep in touch with family, friends and work colleagues, not to mention sharing all those big events (and small – like breakfast) in your life. With new smartphones, it’s almost too easy to share, or even overshare your information.

A few social posts could give away enough personal information to put your privacy at risk and open yourself up to identity theft.

Here are three handy tips to protect yourself:

  1. Manage your privacy settings – make sure you’re comfortable with the information shared with family, friends, the public, and other websites or apps.
  2. Turn off the location services on your camera and social networking apps so criminals can’t see where you live and potentially when you’re not home.
  3. Be selective with your connections – only 'friend' people you know and trust in the real world.
